Looking for new experiences in an exceptional natural setting? Try a dhow safari along the coast of East Africa.
On board a beautiful traditional wooden dhow, with an experienced local crew, explore the tropical islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago and their rich cultural and natural heritage. Add snorkelling, walks or bicycle rides and sea kayaking, plus the comfort of nights at Miti Miwiri on Ibo, and you have all the ingredients for the trip of a lifetime.
Imagine sailing from one island to the next, kayaking up wide mangrove rivers, snorkelling off sandbanks into turquoise water, and camping on white beaches under the stars of the southern hemisphere.
The waters around Ibo are a protected marine environment. Sea turtles live here and humpback whales visit between July and November. Spinner, humpback and bottlenose dolphins are common; shyer species such as rays and reef sharks have also been seen.
Our safaris
2 nights, 3 days on the islands
Leaving from Ibo, the first night is spent on Rolas Island and the second on Matemo Island, before returning to Ibo.
5 days: 2 nights on the islands and 3 nights on Ibo
Usually the first night on Ibo, the second on Rolas, the third on Matemo, then two more nights on Ibo.
- Rolas Island takes its name from its birds. It is home only to seasonal fishermen, a park ranger and giant coconut crabs. You can walk around it in about an hour; the corals and white beach are untouched.
- Matemo Island is the largest of the three: the tropical island by definition, with a traditional Muslim and animist society preserved from the outside world.
- Ibo Island is the most famous and the most different: a window onto the Portuguese colonial era.
Safaris on Rolas and Matemo are based on camping, with camping food and mineral water. We do our best for your comfort, but you need to be an outdoor person, happy with basic conditions for two days. Snorkelling gear, tents and the dhow with its local crew are included.
